Having a lawn on your property has a lot of benefits. Many homeowners find that having their own lawn gives them an extra space to not just relax on a lazy afternoon, but they can even entertain family and friends there. The one thing about having lawns though is that they would require maintenance in order to look beautiful and healthy. Now that will not be a problem when you have plenty of time and of course, your body can take the toll of laboring over your lawn, but it’s a different story when you are a senior citizen.
Senior citizens do find it as easy as others to regularly maintain their lawns, that’s why here are some tips that they can follow to make the burden easier for them.
1. Get a self-propelled lawn mower – here’s the easiest thing you can do, and that is buying a self-propelled lawn mower. If you are determined to still be the one to maintain your lawn, make it little easier. Mowing the lawn can be taxing, and if you are no longer as agile as you used to be, it would not be a good idea to add more strain to your body. A self-propelled lawn mower pushes itself and all you will need to do is guide them on where they need to go. With this type of mower, your body will not be as fatigued, giving you energy for other things you want to do.
2. Hire someone to do it for you – if you have the money to spare, instead of doing everything on your own, you can actually get other people to help you with the tasks for the lawn. This is the better choice when you are recovering from a sickness and you can just focus on getting healthy again.
3. Do preventive measures to stop crabgrass from growing – one of the worst things to encounter when you have a lawn is crabgrass. To lessen the threat, apply preemergence herbicide during the spring. With the herbicide, the seeds will no longer grow and you will have less to think about when it comes to maintaining your lawn.
4. Install edging – when you landscape your lawn, you do not need to fill the whole place with grass, as this would be harder to maintain. Install edging along pathways so that the grass will not grow beyond that. Make sure to use quality materials like fiberglass, etc instead of plastic as it may not be effective.
5. Install raised beds and use large pots and planters – straining your back may be one of the effects if you will still want to keep maintaining your lawn. To lessen the effect on your back, raise the flower beds and use large pots so that you do not need to bend too much when planting. Gardening has many great effects on people, and you do not need to give up the hobby even as you grow older.
